Being a Good Designer is Complex (simple)

My unhealthy habit is being a professional over thinker in a constant state of, analysis paralysis.

I love thinking there is a complex solution and answers to questions I have.

Lately I have being going down the rabbit hole as a designer trying to improve my workflow, design process and habits 🧠

You research every shortcut and plugin for a program before you use it, make a new portfolio website every six months and find new ways to grow my social media presence through different hashtags. Sound about right?

All these things do “work” however, they are just blockers from you sitting down and doing the actual work that needs to be done.

If you are designer, editor or writer who is just getting started you have to create more work and post it online - no ifs or buts. You need the experience under you belt for someone to be able to pay you. Have no ideas? Here are some fake design client briefs

News flash, watching the 10 top tips for you to become a better logo designer. Will not help you become a better logo designer. There are learnings from someone who as already designed for a long period of time. I am guilty of this too. 🤠

If I could re-start my design journey I would…

  1. Create basic designs out of shapes and text - on the most important design principles C.R.A.P - Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity.

  2. Start by finding work I would love to make myself

  3. I would Steal like an artist 📖

  4. Then set myself a challenge to create 1 design a day for 60 days and post it on Twitter or Instagram + share what I’m learning along the way🌍

If you are designer that needs to get more client’s… Good quality design - is the most important thing.

Only then, can you focus on packaging up your offer (read $100m Offers 📖) to be able to sell your services more effectively to clients and increase the amount you charge.

Good work is the foundation of every freelancers business. Every time I took action to try something new and improve the quality of my work I have never regretted it.

I was more proud of my work, increased my prices and grew my social media presence.

Creating great quality work is all about - reducing your options and getting into deeper focus.

Sitting down and being focused at one task to improve our life or business is that thing we often put off doing.

  • Next time you run out of ideas - set a timer and start creating.

  • Next time you want to increase the prices of your services - create more work and take risks

  • Next time you want to grow more on social media - post more content.

You learn to enjoy something by getting really good at it.

I was asked in a class once “Are you are a thinker or a doer?” “I’m a thinker I said” I used to believe being a thinker was how I get one step ahead of people.

Failing and taking action is how you grow in all aspects of life.

Once you have a solid foundation of action when you learn new knowledge about the skill you are practicing, you can implement the teachings 10x easier. Most importantly you can implement them practically in your work.

Action > education > improve your skills > get more enjoyment + earn more
